Actually, taking food into account, he could survive longer without it, as he already has "fuel" stored in the fat cells he takes with him. Also, look at him. Sure, he's fat, but he's also got plenty of muscle to get around with. He used to coach football, and pretty much any form of physical training would greatly increase his chances of survival. He was also the health teacher, meaning he most likely has at least a basic understanding of what is required for survival in an emergency situation.

Now as for why he would survive where others didn't, including ones more fit for survival than he is, that would be because all eight of the survivors played as through l4d1 and l4d2 are immune to the virus causing the apocalypse. They can still carry it with them, meaning that someone who comes in contact with them may contract the virus, but they themselves are unaffected by it.

Lastly, as far as his personality goes, I can't really say which way is right or wrong. What I can say is that I personally enjoy Coach very much. He seems very fatherly and kind to the other survivors overall, and his A.I. even seems to come to my rescue more often than the rest of the crew when I'm being mauled by a hunter, smoker, or other zombie. I personally find him to be a likeable, respectable, and amusing character.

Coach FTW

Actually, his AI isn't good for me. I was being Ellis and my friend was being Nick. Then Nick got killed, and later when I got downed from a hunter Coach shot it off me, but he didn't bother helping me up instead he went to Rochelle who was farther away(I didn't have the better AI mod installed so we had to restart when I bled out) To this day I joke about how Coach was being racist and that's why he left me to heal Rochelle instead. Lol
